On Nov. 5, 1968, Henry Frye of Guilford County was the first African American elected to the North Carolina House since 1898. Frye became the first African American member of the state Supreme Court in 1983.
On Nov. 10, 1898, the Wilmington Race Riot occurred, resulting in the overthrow of the legally elected city government and, following soon thereafter, the repression of African American voting rights.
