On Sept. 7, 1846, a hurricane plowed through the Outer Banks into the Pamlico sound, creating Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlets. At points where the banks were once connected, the storm created channels deep enough for ships to pass through.

On Sept. 17, 1787, William Blount, Richard Dobbs Spaight, and Hugh Williamson signed the United States Constitution for North Carolina.
