Meeting Some Strangers
I still don't believe I actually did this, but last Sunday I went to a local "Metafilter meetup." I drove over there thinking, "I can't believe I'm doing this." So I show up at this guy's house, he opens the door, and we both say in unison: "I know you." It ended up he works at a local used book store I go to a lot. It ended up being fun, I also got to meet a famous librarian who's website I had been enjoying for several years. (I love saying "famous librarian").
There were two other Metafilter people there and a few other folks wandering in and out. We had good food and ended up watching the host's video he shot at a recent antiquarian book fair. The geekiness of the evening was pushed to whole new level when Jessamyn was trying to take a picture of the TV screen with her camera, and one guy said to take pictures of a TV you need to turn out all the lights and shut off your flash. When asked how he gained this expertise, he said he learned how to do that when he was kid and you could take pictures of your high score on Atari games and mail them off for cool patches. None of us could top that.
I got there at 7 PM and ended up staying until 10:30, which is a long time for me to remain in a social situation where I don't know anyone.
Here's a picture of four of us. A couple more pics here, you may have to dig around, look for the ones from Jessamyn.
I was really amazed when I stepped in the guy's living room and one of the first things I saw was an incredibly maudlin antique picture of a dog with dead kid. I have the same damn thing hanging on my wall:
