Down East for the Day
Saturday I hopped in my car and got out of town on I-40 and quickly got off the interstate on some back roads as I headed to Duplin, Sampson, and Pender counties. I wanted to get the hell out of town, and since I enjoy the hell out of driving around eastern NC looking for Confederate monuments, it was as good a day as any to hit the road.
My first stop was the town of Faison, who supposedly put up a plaque to their boys in gray back in 1932. I drove all the hell over that little burg and could not find it. I stopped a couple places and asked about it and no one knew what in the hell I was talking about. I had better luck in Clinton (Sampson County) and Burgaw (Pender County). Both places I quickly found and photographed the monuments and stopped at the local libraries and spoke to helpful librarians. They did not have any info I did not already have, and I ended up letting the lady in Sampson County photocopy some of my stuff.
As I've written about before, I love driving North Carolina back roads, particularly in the eastern part of the state. As soon as you cross over I-95, the land takes on a distinctly different look and feel. The land flattens out and the ground becomes sandy. Although I have lived here for 20+ years, I don't think I'll get to the point where "I miss the dirt in that part of the state" as a co-worker from Mt. Olive recently said. I got to drive through towns like Turkey and Rose Hill, home of the world's largest frying pan.
Below is a picture of the monument in Sampson County, and a couple other pics that were on the roll of film I had developed today:

Clinton (Sampson County) Confederate Monument, in front of the courthouse.

New Bern (Craven County) Confederate Monument, in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Lenoir (Caldwell County) Confederate Monument, next to the courthouse.
