You Know What's Funny About the Tsunami in Asia?

Yeah, I really said that. It floored me, how early on, there were reports of "10,000 plus dead! Celebrity X is OK, and celebrity Y was seen riding a mattress downstream." I mean who gives a shit (besides their families) about Petra somebody the swimsuit model or somebody that was a regular on Oprah? Or even, please, I saw a report that Jet Li was OK. I'm sorry about Richard Attenborough's granddaughter, because he was in the best movie ever made, "The Great Escape." If someone I cared about like Bob Dylan or Julia Roberts was in peril, hell yeah, I want to know about it. I was wondering about Arthur C. Clarke and had to go to the Dead People Server to find out he was okay.

I know the above may seem mean-spirited and unsympathetic. Celebrities deserve our hopes and prayers for survival as much as all the poor regular people who suffered and perished. This was kind of an over-the-top indictment of our media and celebrity worshipping culture, in a purely Jonathan Swift kind of way (I wish I was that good, too bad he's not around anymore).

I was looking in vain for a Tsunami Celeb Update page, Yahoo seemed to do it pretty good here.

After going back and linking to all those people I mentioned and seeing some their faces, etc., I feel a little bad about making fun of their endangerment or death, but not bad enough to delete this post.

P.S. I hope this asshat increases the initial offer of $35 million in aid to perhaps a figure more than the $40 million they're spending on his inauguration.

P.P.S. Here's a truly horrifying site (SFW), courtesy of Metafilter.

I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through...
