History Nerd-O-Rama

It's been a great couple of days.

On Tuesday, as part of new employee orientation (I've only worked there for a year) we had a tour of the State Capitol. It was a great tour, I think even someone who isn't a geek like me would enjoy it. It is supposedly one of the best preserved examples of a major civic building in the Greek revival style of architecture. Lots of original furniture, etc. in there. By the way, the rest of the new employee orientation sucked. It was complete with icebreakers, bad snacks, etc.

As soon as that nightmare was over, I hoofed it over to UNC-G where I met 18th-Century Lady and had dinner with and heard a talk by Gary Moulton, the editor of the definitive edition of The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He gave a nice talk about the history of the journals themselves and their publication history. I was suprised they were still finding journals by other expedition members as late as the 1950's. The published edition is 13 volumes and he worked on them for 25 years. When I talked to him afterward he told he thought he had the best job of any historian in the 20th century and he was really humble and appreciative that he got to work on this national treasure.

On Wednesday morning, I had to give a talk to the DAR. It wasn't great, but it got me out of the office and was a nice decompression from the fun of the previous day.
