Three New Words I Learned Because I'm Reading All the King's Men:

portiere: a curtain hanging across a doorway

jalousie: a blind with adjustable horizontal slats for admitting light and air while excluding direct sun and rain

gallus: one of two supporting bands worn across the shoulders to support trousers, skirt, or belt -- usually used in plural and often with pair

GD, that is a good book. I think this is the book that taught Pat Conroy how to write.
