Monsters, Mobsters, and Madonnas of Michigan
Last weekend friend Ann was in town. In addition to a sick japanese movie, we watched Monster. It was a very well done, but sad and disturbing film.
I got curious about the real story behind the movie, and started googling around the internet, where there is never a shortage of pages about serial killers. I found out Aileen Wournos (serial killer lady from movie) was born in Rochester, Michigan, about ten miles from where I grew up. She even spent some of her early years in Troy which is right next door to the town I grew up in. I had a few good friends from Troy during my high school years, but I was just a little kid when Wournos was living there, probably honing her torturing insect and small animal skills. Although I sure as hell remember when the Oakland County Child Killer was on the loose.
Rochester was also home to the "Machus Red Fox" restaurant, site of the last meal of Jimmy Hoffa.
My favorite Rochester story: Rochester's most famous scion is probably Madonna. A good friend of my parents was the school librarian while Madonna attended high school. I asked her if she remembered M., and in true librarian fashion, she answered: "No, she never came in the library. But her brother NEVER returned his books on time."
