Still Fighting that War...

Last night I rode to a town about an hour and a half away with my boss. He had to give a talk at a SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans) meeting. As usual, this was a strange affair. It started out with the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag, then a pledges to the NC flag and the Confederate battle flag. When they called the roll, the people answered with the names of their ancestor and their ancestor's regiment. I'm glad they didn't call on their guests, I would have had to answer "John Knevels, 11th MICHIGAN Regiment."

The group was the usual melange you probably find at these meetings. A few guys who were just Civil War nerds and liked to get out and talk to people with similiar interests, and a few folks who are not quite in the closet white supremacists. But it is part of mission at work to talk to these groups when they ask us to, and its a good way to get 5 hours of comp time for work.

One object of concern that came up before the meeting: apparently the upcoming Dukes of Hazard movie will not feature the Confederate flag on the hood of the car, "General Lee," oh, and the car won't be named the "General Lee" either. Some of those guys weren't too happy about that.

The best part of it was we met at a barbecue place and I had two plates of eastern NC barbecue, turnip greens, hush puppies, and ham. At one point, as I sat there with a mouthful of barbecue and was working on my second glass of ice tea so sweet you could stand your spoon up in it, I said to my boss "I'm so damn glad I live in North Carolina."
