I'm Such A Dork . . .
. . . I went in to work on my day off to do some research.
It started dawning on me, as I sift through piles of newspaper coverage of Confederate Monument unveilings, that a lot of these counties had to go to the General Assembly to get permission to give the monument ladies money or land to put their monuments on. I'm not sure why, I'll have to try and figure that out.
So, I've been digging around. One index to the General Assembly proceedings wasn't very fruitful. However, about an hour and a half spent with another index, got me to another set of books, which gave me the bill numbers, which is how the originals of these things are filed.
Of course, I could have gotten the published versions of these bills from that last set of books, but why do that when the originals are just down the hall? I got about eight today, and I'm in a position to get the twenty or so I have left pretty quickly. I even got some leads on some monuments I knew almost nothing about, not even the year they were built.
Damn, it was so much fun. When one of my coworkers (whom I don't care for) heard I was there on my day off, she pronounced me a "hopeless dork." It was mostly in fun and mutual history-geek admiration, 'cause she's done the same thing. I told her, "I'll take the dork part, but I'm not sure about being hopeless."
