Going to Fayetteville
I took Friday off work (because I could) and made the trek to Fayetteville, home of the oldest Confederate Monument (a bad pic I know, only one I could find) in NC and also home to Fort Bragg.
I had done a little homework, and mapped out how to get the library to research said monument. I had neglected to find out where Cross Creek Cemetery, the location of aforementioned monument, was located. A quick stop at the Visitor's Bureau took care of that. I had no problem finding the library, the cemetery, or the monument. The cemetery was great, as you can see from some of the pictures at the link above. I snapped a bunch of B&W pics of the monument, hopefully I'll post some later this week so you don't have to look at that piece-of-shit painting I linked to. I even found the grave of the guy who sculpted the monument.
At the library I couldn't find anything I didn't already have on the 1868 monument in the Cemetery, but I found a bunch of really good stuff on the "Standing Soldier" monument they put up in 1902 in a town square. Of course it had been moved, and it was a horror show trying to find it. But the helpful folks at the Visitor's Bureau came through again. As I was driving around, I realized it had been quite awhile since I've stumbled around some dieing NC downtown in search of one those stone sentinels. I don't think the pictures of that one came out very good.
Here's to more Confederate Monument trips. The only bad thing about the trip was the only county between here and Cumberland County is Harnett County, who doesn't have a monument.
