Just Like Lewis & Clark
Saturday the Real, Live, Actual Girl and I went kayaking on Falls Lake. She has a couple of Loon 111s and we strapped them on top of her car and were in the water by 6:30 AM.
Folks who know me, know I'm not a very athletic or outdoorsy type. But a girl can get me outside. Eighteenth Century Lady can get me on a hike or a bike ride once in awhile, and Real, Live, Actual Girl actually got me up before dawn doing some actual physical exertion.
We saw some beaver dams but no beavers. She's a real birdwatcher, and had her book with her, so we got to see a green heron, a great blue heron, some type of a kingfisher, a red-headed woodpecker, a downy woodpecker, and some type of cormorant.
The lake is relatively new (1980's sometime) and there are still a lot of places that have dead trees sticking up out of the water. They were fun to go and paddle around in, you felt like you were somewhere the idiots in the power boats couldn't get to. We ended up staying on the lake until about 2 PM. We weren't paddling the whole time, sometimes we'd just stop and float around. Its a great way to do nothing.
When I got home Saturday night, I had that great achy, a bit too much sun, sun-screen sticky feeling that makes you know you've been outside all day. It felt great, I'm an idiot to not do it more often. We're already trying to figure out when we can do it again.
