I killed some time at work last week going through our small collection of papers on Chang and Eng Bunker, commonly known as "The Siamese Twins." Since they lived near Mt. Airy when they retired from show business, that justifies us having Siamese Twin stuff.

This link gives a pretty good overview of their life in retirement and their unique living arrangements. They seemed to be pretty successful, they both married, had lots of kids, and owned lots of land and slaves.

One of the things we have here is a copy of their autopsy report. Its not as interesting as I thought it would be, lots of medical language which I guess I should have expected.

The thing that cracked me up is the 1860 census. Under the heading occupation, which was usually filled with things like farmer, laborer, or merchant, the listing for both the Siamese Twins (they had seperate entries and seperate households) said their occupations were "Siamese Twin." Of course, this wasn't true, they were farmers. The thing that made me laugh: I can just see the census taker talking to the both of them. He writes down "Siamese Twin" under Chang's entry, then turning slightly to face Eng, says "And what does your brother do?"
