On May 25, 1673, in what is now Perquimans County, Ann Marwood Durant appeared as Andrew Ball's attorney in court. This is the earliest known record of a woman acting as an attorney in North Carolina.

On May 26, 1908, voters approved statewide prohibition of alcohol, effective January 1909.

On May 29, 1831, Fayetteville suffered a fire that destroyed numerous buildings, including the State House where North Carolina delegates approved the U.S. Constitution of 1789.

On May 31, 1775, Josiah Martin, the colony's last royal governor, abandoned his office in New Bern, marking the end of British rule in North Carolina.

On June 1, 1956, federal agents staking out a 20,000-gallon moonshine still in Wilkes County apprehended the owner's son, future NASCAR racing legend Junior Johnson.
