Indie Cred, Shmindie Cred
Well, it looks like Loretta Lynn is the next old country singer to get some indie / hipster cred. I really don't know much about her, I'd probably enjoy some of her more traditional country stuff, and I'm sure she's paid her dues. Its nice The White Stripes are using some of their fleeting popularity to promote her. Where will this lead? The Rick Rubin / Johnny Cash deal of course resulted in some great music. Maybe in twenty years whoever the cool-to-like new band will decide that Journey was cool and they'll reunite and do a solo tour featuring the music of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
When is this going to happen to Emmylou Harris? Or did it already happen and I missed it while I was listening to her music anyways for the last 20 years?
Fuck it, I'm just bellyachin. If it hadn't been for Bob Dylan I probably wouldn't like Guthrie, and lots of other connections like that. Finding out who influenced my favorite musicians, writers, artists, etc has led to a lot of neat discoveries. Its just that this Loretta Lynn / White Stripes deal has such an air of an annointing or bestowal of something about it.
I remember when I bought a Robert Johnson box set in the late 1980's. The music clerk was about my age, going on 30, and said to me: "Let me guess, when you were in high school you were into Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones and you always heard how cool this guy was and you're finally checking him out."
The clerk was exactly right.
