Odds and Sods
For the folks who don't work in a library, I assure you this web site is very true-to-life. For any aspiring librarians, maybe it'll give you second thoughts. Link courtesy of Jessamyn.
Speaking of idiots coming into the library, if you haven't looked at it in awhile, check out the Evil Antique Lady website. Continually updated, and its real too. I can't believe I used to deal with that creature on a regular basis.
Here's kind of a f*cked up blog I stumbled across this morning. Not pornographic or anything, but watch your back at work: Sor Dellia's Blog of Beauty.
Runaway Slave Ad of the Day
One Hundred Dollars Reward - Ran away from Hampton Farm, on Thursday, 24th instant, a light colored negro, called HENRY JONES, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches in height, and about 25 years of age, with very thick lips and lean face. The above reward will be paid on the apprehension and delivery of the said negro, or upon his being lodged in jail so that I can get him.

Working on the Railroad...
I don't have cable tv, internet access at home, and don't subscribe to a newspaper. After spending all afternoon and part of yesterday evening reading 1849 newspapers, I felt like I knew more about what was going on then than what is happening today. I wanted to walk into work today and say, "How about Mr. Clay's speech on the senate floor last week concerning the Wilmot Proviso? A strong 'huzzah' for the gentleman from Kentucky!"
Yesterday I was the railroad girl's office and we were cackling about a newspaper article I found about a new race of people someone claimed to have discovered in Africa. Supposedly these people had tails and the article made sure to emphasize they made really crappy slaves. The other staffers looked at the crazy archivists and rolled their eyes.
