The New Austerity: Week One

Since I moved about a week ago, I have had no cable tv or internet access. This is mostly because of lack of funds, but also because getting cable hooked up is a pain in the ass and I've been super-busy the last couple weeks and am leaving town for ten days starting tomorrow.

The only thing I've really missed so far was a History Channel show on Comic Book Superheroes. Last night was the first time I came home from work and went to automatically turn on my tv, and paused for a second with a momentary feeling of emptiness in my gut. I think I'm going to be OK though. I've got lots of unpacking to do and lots of reading I want to catch up on.

When at home I've been listening a lot to WUNC 91.5. I've never listened to public radio much, always preferring to listen to CDs in my car. I generally like it, its nice to hear some news thats actually indepth and not 20 second sound bites. They'll talk to some expert or author for 5 or 10 minutes, break off for a station ID, and then come back and actually talk to the person some more. Most stations would have switched to the skydiving dog story by then.

The thing I hate about public radio is the oh-so-sincere-and-serious tone many of the announcers seem to take. I don't know, there is just a certain voice I can identify as a public radio voice. And the callers who call in not to ask a question, but to show off how smart they think they are. Especially the guy the other night who used the phrase "It causes you to rexamine your paradigm" twice in a row. I hate that word "paradigm."

I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through...
