Running With Scissors: or, At Home on the Isle of Misfit Toys

This is a weird elementary school flashback I had today when I noticed a short public school bus.

In the fifth or sixth grade, the powers that be selected about 4 or 5 students from our class to go once a week for a couple hours to work with the "special education" kids. To be honest, I do not know what the current term is for special education kids. The clearest and best way I can think to describe them was that they were kids that had Down Syndrome and things like that. And yeah, they did ride the short bus to school.

Its weird, this memory is blurry and fragmented, and just welled to the surface today. I think we mostly helped the kids with craft projects. There was little boy named Jamie, who tended to get violent and most people did not like to work with him. For some reason, I liked the little guy and would usually end up with him. It figures I would relate to the pariah in a room full of special needs children. I've always associated with misfits, goofballs, and miscreants.

The main thing I remembered about Jamie, and it just exploded in my head today when I saw that bus, was the scissors. Of course, all the scissors in that room had the rounded points. All of them were metal except one pair that was plastic. We always made sure Jamie got the plastic scissors.

As a history nerd, I think this is a pretty cool website. I got lost there for awhile. From Revolution to Reconstruction.

While checking to make sure I had the wording correct for "Isle of the Misfit Toys," I ran across this Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer TV show website. Lots of interesting stuff about deleted scenes and PC censorship.
