Job Hopes, A Productive Day, and An Epiphany
I found out I'm not in the running for the sun-shunning-mole job in cataloging I applied for. I turned the application in too late. But I'm still in the running for the Library Technical Assistant II (it should be called Assistant University Archivist) job. It is in the same place where I work now. When I applied for it I wasn't sure if I even wanted it. But after my "interview" (chatting with the boss for ten minutes with no advance notice) and thinking about it, I have my hopes up and hope I get it. It starts out at about what I was getting after several years at my last real job. Staying in Raleigh would be nice for now, moving would be easier. One thing in my favor, the job called for five years of library experience and the other two folks in the running can't match my 15+ years. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
I went into work today for about five hours, which is a long time for me. Usually I do only two or three hours a day. I got a lot done, slinging the Block 10 Canal Agreements, corraling the Big Opening Research Proposals, and filing Block 10 Cutting Tallies. The university archives are a weird place, there were two people scheduled to work on Saturday, and there must have been eight of us there. Most of us were student assistants like me that work whenever we feel like it. I got a lot done and got to do some socializing too. Weird Jewish Girl With the Ugly Feet acts like I don't exist. I don't really like her much but I may have to make it my mission to get her to pay attention to me just for something to do.
I think I figured something out today. Archivists are people who don't have the social skills to be a librarian.
I want to be an archivist.
