Monday, April 28, 2003 ::: Inter arma silent leges
I can't imagine what it would be like to get a master's degree in something like math or engineering, instead of history, which is fun. I'm reading all these articles about free speech during WWI for Constitutional History and they make no sense, its all just words on paper. My brain is full.
My Constitutional History professor likes to rattle off little assignments for us as we're scrambling for the door. Last friday he told me to find out what the phrase "Inter arma silent leges" means.
I typed it into Google and found out there was an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with that title. I don't think that's what my professor was looking for but I'm gonna be sure and mention it.
Then I tried to get fancy and looked in Black's Law Dictionary and had no luck there. Then I looked in a foreign phrase dictionary and found it. I can't even answer a simple f*cking reference question anymore. If I still was in Tel Ref I would of looked in that foreign phrase book on the second shelf, the one with the blue-grey and yellow cover and never learned a damn thing about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
It means "in time of war the law is silent." Coined by some Roman guy named Cicero. Hopefully I can rattle all that off in class tomorrow and he'll leave me alone the rest of the day.
Quotes of the Day:
A few famous last words from a Famous Last Words web site. Half of them are probably bullsh*t but I love this kinda stuff.
"Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something"
